چکیده

The effect of halothane on experimental ischaemic muscle pain has been studied in 18 human volunteers. The submaxiTniim effort tourniquet test was used in this investigation because it has been shown by previous workers to be a sensitive experimental test of analgesia. Two concentrations of halothane (0.25 and 0.35%) were compared with nitrous oxide (30%) in a controlled experiment. It was found that halothane 0.35% is of the same order of effectiveness as an analgesic as is nitrous oxide 30%. Halothane 0.25% appeared to have no analgesic action, and the possibility of a slight antanalgesic action at this concentration could not be eliminated. The practical effects of this finding are reviewed, and it is suggested that this finding taken with the work of other investigators indicates that halothane should be considered as an analgesic drug, and that the application of the term antanalgesic to this agent is misleading.

Analgesic effect in humans of subanaesthetic isoflurane concentrations evaluated by experimentally induced pain.

The analgesic effect of subanaesthetic concentrations of ether, trichloroethylene, methoxyflurane and halothane has been investigated previously using either clinical assessment or pain threshold measurements, but with conflicting results. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the analgesic effect of isoflurane using experimental pain models. We studied 12 healthy volunteers at three...

Volatile anaesthetics antagonize nitrous oxide and morphine-induced analgesia in the rat.

We reported previously that nitrous oxide induces pre-emptive analgesia that is partially antagonized by naloxone and totally antagonized by halothane. The aims of this study were to determine if halothane and isoflurane are similar in this respect and to examine if volatile anaesthetics antagonize the analgesic effect of exogenous opioids. We found that 75% nitrous oxide prolonged tail-flick l...

A comparison between the effect of halothane and propofol on liver enzymes after general anesthesia

Background: Halothane is the routine used inhalation anesthetic drug in the world but at present, there is an increasing interest for using intravenous anesthetics like propofol. The purpose of this study was to compare these anesthetic effects on hepatic enzymes. Methods: From 2006 to 2007, this study was performed on fifty eight patients classified in class I of American Society of Anesthetics...

Sevoflurane versus halothane: postoperative maladaptive behavioral changes: a randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND The authors conducted a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial to determine whether the use of sevoflurane in children undergoing anesthesia and surgery results in a higher incidence of postoperative maladaptive behavioral changes as compared with halothane. METHODS Children and their parents (n = 102) were randomly assigned to either a halothane group (n = 50) or a sevoflurane...

Oral clonidine premedication reduces postoperative pain in children.

Clonidine is an effective preanesthetic medication in children, providing a preoperative sedative effect. The analgesic properties of the drug have been well documented in adults. The current study was designed to investigate the effect of oral clonidine given preoperatively on postoperative pain in children undergoing minor surgery. In a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial, 90 c...
